My Penance for Being A Spoiled Sports Fan

advertisement

It doesn't take a long look at the abysmal sports cul-de-sac that is the South Florida sports landscape to know that there is something wrong with this town. The Miami Dolphins are winless (0-9 to be exact), have lost their franchise running back (who finally started to play like one) for the season, and are quickly losing their fan base. The Miami Heat (as of this entry) have only one win, their superstar on the mend and an aging hall of famer in the middle. The Miami Hurricanes have had a dismal season, punctuated by getting shutout at home (the FINAL game at the historic Orange Bowl). The Florida Marlins...well, I don't even want to get into them.

I can only think of one reason for this horrible sports season--everything is cyclical. Teams do good and it's inevitable that they have to go through a period of bad. I'm certain that it is written somewhere or at the very least understood.

I grew up in a time when the Miami Hurricanes were so dominant that they were the most hated college team (and maybe even the most hated team period) in America. Maybe second to Notre Dame but the Golden Domers at least had a higher power on their side. Da U just kept pumping out NFL-quality talent while stomping over the competition. Sure there was the occasional Vinny Testaverde flub (vs. Penn State) and the hilarious premature Lamar Thomas celebration as he gets stripped from behind (against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl if I remember) a la Leon Lett but for the most part there was the arrogance, the domination. I loved it. Folks, that run has surely ended and now we have a JV team masquerading as a college football program. Either poor recruiting or poor coaching or a combination of both. There was no greater punctuation of this than with the thorough beat down Virginia gave the Canes in the last game that will ever be played at the Orange Bowl. The decline has been evident at QB starting with Brock Berlin (who still saw SOME success) and carried through to Kyle Wright (who has thrown at least ONE interception in all but one of the games he's played in) and will continue for the foreseeable future on to Kirby Freeman. Ouch. First year coach and Can alum Randy Shannon. So I beg for forgiveness.

The Miami Heat have been pretty mediocre until Pat Riley came on board. Then there was success and the heartbreak to the Knicks. But even before the redemption in the form of a championship, Shaq, and D-Wade, I could at least say that the Heat was a good team and always won its share of games. I laughed at bottom feeders like the Clippers and Hawks. I took it for granted. Now we have an aging center (who I still will contend is serviceable at best) and no cap room for the future to help support D-Wade once he has to go at this basketball thing alone. Off to a horrible start, the Heat boo-birds started chiming in. Well, this wasn't as painful, but painful nonetheless. It's too early but things just might get corrected once D-Wade comes back.

Finally my first love...the Miami Dolphins. Spoiled by the great years of Dan Marino, the average years of Jimmy Johnson and even the non-descript tenure of Dave Wannstedt (for as much as I and others hated him, would you hate on a coach who averaged 10 wins a season?), I am now looking at a collapsing franchise thanks to the mismanagement of Wannstedt, Nick Satan and currently Cam Cameron. I am not even angry that we will possibly go 0-16. Hey, now the Dolphins can have both undefeated and winless records! But it's painful to watch a storied franchise fall into the realm of irrelevance. I've written this before...at least the other woeful teams (Rams, Cards, 49ers, the resurgent Browns) have a bright future with talent. This team is devoid of talent. Devoid until said talent realizes its...talent and plays well.

So I beg the Sports Gods for forgiveness. To spare my teams the shame and help right the ship. Ok, I get it. I took it all for granted. Will someone turn the lights on in Cam Cameron's head?

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

OMG! I thought I had it bad here in Minnesota with the Vikings and Wolves. At least we have won a couple of games. But, Sunday was pretty bad being shut out by Green Bay! I am not sure we will win many more now that our rookie phenom is hurt.

Hang in there and consider this, they can only go up!

Vikes have Adrian Peterson (though he's hurt) and that is something to look forward to at least. There are some young players on defense too. Wolves are rebuilding.

PS, thank you for taking Antoine Walker.

The Vikings defense is great. They just have no offense except for Peterson. Word is that he will only be out for a week and it is not real serious. But, I read about another doctor who said they should not play him for the rest of the season. Peterson actually wanted to come back into the game on Sunday.

I don't even know what to say about the Wolves. I don't know any of them anymore. The Wolves have been re-building in almost every year since they got the franchise.

PS, thank you for taking Antoine Walker.

      Your welcome, I think....

You guys are strong up the middle and I like Greenway at LB. I heard that in the offseason Childress would be interested in getting McNabb which would be great cos I'm not sold on Jackson at QB. I am not too fond of Childress as a coach considering when he was in Philly Andy Reid really called the offensive plays. I personally would handle Peterson with kid gloves considering his injury history dating back to college. His running style is like Robert Smith's but he is more powerful and really exposes him to guys taking shots at his legs and a lot of pounding.

I wonder about the Jefferson acquisition in the KG trade (I love KG). I don't see them being at all equal. I think Randy Foye (I get him and Brandon Roy confused sometimes) is solid and there is a good foundation there. Unfortunately the West is super competitive. Antoine Walker never took a shot he didn't like.

I hadn't heard about McNabb. But, I am wondering if Childress will even be around next year. The local media is calling him "Steckelesque" in honor of Les Steckel who only had one year as head coach here. I thought it was funny that the year after Childress left that Reid gave up the playcalling to the new offensive coordinater. Childress should have listened to Brad Johnson last year and let him play to his strengths. Jackson may be a good qb in a couple of years, but he is not there yet. My sister is a Green Bay fan and she says now that she is thankful that the Vikings signed Childress. His next interview was to be with Green Bay, but Minnesota signed him first.

I haven't followed the T-wolves at all this year. It was kind of a bad omen for me that the new players were to be introduced to the media on the same day that the 35W bridge collapsed.

Philly is souring on McNabb and they also drafted a young QB. Since McNabb played well in Childress' system (or Reid's system) he would be a logical fit there instead of Chicago (where he is also rumored to possibly go). I would like to say that Troy Williamson is underutilized as a vertical option but...he really hasn't shown much since being drafted to replace Moss. My big thing is that I guess with Peterson's injury history, I'm sure that Chester Taylor will stay. SO you have two highly paid RBs. That's my fear with the Dolphins. I'm certain to get the first pick and a QB (we drafted one this past year) and a RB (we have one but is hurt) are the top two positions available. That's a lot of money.

The football Cardinals will never go any where. The Bidwells will sell any player that becomes good enough to attract attention. They do not care about winning, they care about the bottom line. At least you have owners that care about winning.

Well, the Cards have a great nucleus in Leinart/Fitzgerald/Boldin. I'm not a Leinart fan but he's better than what the Dolphins have. I don't know much about the Bidwells but the owner down here is getting blasted as not caring about winning. I don't buy it. He's just made bad decisions.

The Bidwells have a long history (I used to live in St. Louis when they were there) of being total cheapskates. If Leinart survives, he will be smart to move when his contract expires.
